Sleepy Eye has a parks system that is at least equal to or surpasses any community of equal size in the state. The ten parks which range in size from 1 city block to 18.2 acres are arranged for easy accessibility for all city residents and visitors.
Wooldrik Park is located in the downtown area. It contains an eight foot statue of Ish Tak Ha Ba (Chief Sleepy Eye).
Veteran's Park is also located in downtown Sleepy Eye. It contains a Veteran's Memorial Wall with names of servicemen past and present that have served in the US military. It also is the home to the KIA Monument with the names of those men who were from Sleepy Eye and gave the ultimate sacrifice in the service to their country. The military branches are represented by the individual flags flying in the park, as well as the United States and POW/MIA flags.
Burnside Park contains an ice rink, warming house, and softball field.
Eagles Park features tennis courts, sand volleyball courts, basketball courts, a baseball diamond, and playground equipment.
Kiefer Park offers a softball field, tennis courts, a basketball court, playground area, and a covered picnic shelter.
Prairieview Park is one of the newest parks, it has two adjoining softball fields, a playground, and covered shelter.
South Park has a large playground, basketball courts, horse shoe pits, skateboard park, and a covered shelter.
The Water Park contains the newly built Family Aquatic Center, which is open from June through Labor Day.
Allison Park is on the south side of Sleepy Eye Lake, it has two playgrounds, horse shoe pits, sand volleyball, basketball court, and five shelters. It is within walking distance of a swimming beach, and fishing pier. The Lake Bike Trail also goes through the park.
Sportsmen's Park is on the north side of Sleepy Eye Lake. This park has disc golf, a designated swimming area, three fishing docks, a boat launch, playground, large covered shelter, flush toilets, pets are allowed, and numerous camping sites with electrical hookup, and two camping cabins. Call 507-794-4040, from 8:00am until 10:00pm, Monday through Saturday, for camp site reservations. In 2017, there will be an addition of a new bathhouse and water to all sites, as well as the addition of a dump site at the campgrounds. With these additional amenities, there will be an increase in the price for camping. Campsite rental will be $25.00 (plus tax), per site, per night, and the camping cabins' cost will be $50 (tax included), per night, per cabin except on holiday weekends where the cost will be $65 per night. We will begin taking reservations for 2017 season, on January 2, 2017.
Sleepy Eye Lake is a tremendous outlet for local water sports activity. It is also a great fishing lake for panfish, bass, walleye, and northern pike.
All City Park Shelters may be reserved. Shelters are on a first come first serve basis unless there are paid reservations. Renters should carry their receipts showing payment in case there are any questions on the day of the rental. The price for a daily reservation is $30.00 for the 3 large shelters at Allison Park and the one at Sportsmen's and $20.00 for all remaining park shelters. Any returned request must be made 24 hours in advance of the reservation date, there will be a $5.00 service charge for each refund or change of date. Reservations must be paid for when made. Age limit is 18 or older, all reservations should be made between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm, M-F at the City Office (507-794-3731).
Large shelters hold approximately 15 to 20 picnic tables.
City Ordinance forbids glass containers in our parks.
All City Parks close at 10:00 pm, unless an extended time permit is obtained.
All shelters have lights and electricity. Bring your own bulbs.
We ask that you collect all garbage and place it in the proper containers before leaving the park.
