A minimum 20 training hours is required along with attendance at a minimum of 7 crew meetings per year. You must take a Refresher Course every two years (which is hosted on a weekend in Sleepy Eye)
When on “Call” you must have no longer than a 5 minute response time (to ambulance garage). Shifts are 12 hours (6 a.m. – 6 p.m. /6 p.m. -6 a.m.) but we are flexible based on your availability.
- The Sleepy Eye Ambulance Service is considered a “volunteer” service but we do offer compensation for being on “Call” and additional pay for “Runs”.
- Your attendance would be required at every class. It is a big commitment to become a member of an ambulance service, but, the benefits down the road can be huge!
- If you are planning on entering any type of healthcare field, this job will help prepare you in many different ways. We have had several former crew members go on to become doctors, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses.
- Both the EMT (160 hours) and First Responder (48 hours) courses require passing a practical and written test.
- The EMT course also requires passing a National Registry Computerized Test.
- You must be 18 years old to take the test but can take the course at age 17.
- First responders have limitations on the crew
- The City of Sleepy Eye would pay all tuition costs, provided you make a minimum TWO-YEAR commitment to our service and take active call a minimum of three shifts per month.
- If you do not complete the class, do not become certified, or fulfill the call time commitment, you would have to reimburse full tuition costs (approx. $1500).
