REQUIREMENTS:
> The EMT (160 hours) course require passing a practical (hands-on equipment) test. The EMT course also requires passing a National Registry Computerized Test.
> The First Responder (48 hours) courses require passing a practical (hands-on equipment) and written test.
- There are legal limitations on the scope of care a First Responder can give.
> You must be 18 years old to take the test but can take the course at age 17.
> The Sleepy Eye Ambulance Service requires a minimum of 7 Ride-A-Long Runs which would begin after successful completion of the course.
>We would also need to do a background check prior to the start of class.
> The City of Sleepy Eye would pay all tuition costs, provided you make a minimum TWO-YEAR commitment to our service and agree to take active call a minimum of three shifts per month. If you do not complete the class, become certified but do not fulfill the call time commitment, you must reimburse full tuition costs (approx. $1500).

Other requirements:
- Once you are a member of our local service you are required to continue with your education which includes attendance of monthly training meetings and other sessions as needed. A minimum 20 training hours is required along with attendance at a minimum of 7 crew meetings per year. You must take a Refresher Course every two years (which is hosted on a weekend in Sleepy Eye)
- When on-call you must have no longer than a 5-minute response time to ambulance garage.
- Shifts are 12 hours (6 a.m. – 6 p.m. /6 p.m. -6 a.m.) but we are flexible based on your availability.
- We always try to always have 3 crew members on call.

Compensation:
Although each FR / EMT working for the Sleepy Eye Ambulance Service is considered a Basic Life Support volunteer, the City of Sleepy Eye does compensate call-time, run-time and training as follows:
All on CALL HOURS over 80 hours per pay period will be paid at rate of 1.5X
HOLIDAY PAY:
$1.00 additional call time / 1.5x Run Pay. City Paid Holidays plus Easter Day begins 6 p.m. night before until 6 a.m. following day
